2. The 2004 SPCR Conference

The details of the 2004 SPCR Annual Conference are posted on our Web Page under the heading, Conference. The abstracts of the presentations can also be found on the Web Page under the heading, Publication, Abstracts. A quick overview of the presentation titles and their abstracts augers well for an exciting and rich conference. You can access our Web Site in two ways. First, in the address window, type <pastoralcounselling.ca> and then press Enter. Second, using Google, click Advanced Search, and in the window saying, Exact Phrase, type The Society for Pastoral Counselling Research and then press Enter. Details regarding the conference, registration and accommodation are included in the Conference Program.

3. The 2004 SPCR Pre-Conference Workshop

Registrations are already coming in for the pre-conference workshop on Conflict Resolution in Couples and Individuals: The Transforming Power of Affect. As announced earlier, Dr. Les Greenberg, York University, Toronto, a specialist in conflict resolution in couples and individuals and a renowned scholar and researcher on process psychotherapy will be offering the workshop. To register for both the conference and workshop, complete the form provided for in the program and mail it with your cheque to Martin Rovers, Ph.D., Saint Paul University, 223 Main Street, Ottawa, K1S 1C4.

4. The 2005 SPCR Conference

This is a reminder that the theme of the 2005 SPCR Annual conference will be on ageing.

Dr. Paul Rennick, Assumption University, Windsor, Ontario, has graciously offered to host the conference. Manuscripts which touch on any aspect of ageing are welcome. Of particular interest are papers which report new research findings, be they qualitative or quantitative. A call for papers will be announced in the summer of 2004. However, now is the time to plan for a paper presentation.

5. Publication of Conference Papers

Papers presented at each of the ten annual SPCR Conferences (1994 – 2003) have been or are in the process of being published. The papers presented at the 2003 SPCR conference at Sherbrooke will be published this coming fall in Pastoral Sciences, Vol. 23, No. 2. The details of the publication of the conference presentations, year by year, are as follows:

• 2000: The Challenge of Forgiveness (book, 2001)
• 2001: Spirituality and Health: Multi- disciplinary
• Explorations (Publication in process, book)

Discussions are underway to publish the papers on conflict resolution and mediation to be presented at this year’s conference.

6. Renewal of SPCR Membership

If you have not yet done so, now is the time to renew your membership to the Society. The membership period extends from January 1st to December 31st of a given year. The revenue received from the Membership Fees is used to: maintain the electronic mail list, print the Directory, develop and maintain the SPCR Web Page, and to purchase office supplies. The benefits of membership are: the right to nominate candidates for executive positions and for research awards, and to vote on agenda items at the General Assembly; reduced conference fees; reduced pre-conference workshop fees; and a copy of the SPCR Directory.

You will find a copy of the Membership Form on our Web page under Membership. To download the form, darken and then print it. Send the completed form to Elizabeth Meakes, Membership Chairperson, 107 Borden Avenue, Kitchener, Ontario, N2H 3J2.

7. SPCR Web Page and E-Mail Addresses

We are completing our first year in communicating with you using the Web Page and

E-mail. There is a very different feeling between sending out envelops containing SPCR information and sending out e-mails and placing material on the Web Page. In using the latter, we do not know whether the material is getting to you. Your feedback regarding this manner of communication is very welcome.

The first phase in the construction of the Web Page is nearing completion. There remains yet to prepare the entries for the French pages. During the next phase, our goal is to add color and style.

If there are changes to your e-mail address or postal address, please inform Augustine Meier at ameier@ustpaul.ca.

Some of you have expressed difficulty in accessing the Web Site. As mentioned above, there are two ways that you can access our Web Page. First, type http:/www.pastoralcounselling .ca in the address window and then press Enter. Second, using Google, click Advanced Search, and then in the window, Exact Phrase, type The Society for Pastoral Counselling Research, and press Enter. In using the second method, you will notice other sites on which our Society appears.

8. The SPCR Research Awards and Prizes

The Awards Committee, chaired by Thomas O’Connor, decided to present three recognition research awards at this year’s annual conference, namely, the Dissertation Award, Junior Career Research Award and the Distinguished Career Research Award. Brendan Geary, Ph.D., Loyola College, Baltimore, will be the recipient of the Dissertation Award. Part of his dissertation work was the development of a new paradigm for pastoral counselors. A summary of the model is published in Pastoral Sciences (2003, 22, 1, 65-90). The Junior Career Research Award will be presented to Gilles Fortin, Ph.D., Saint Paul University, for his interdisciplinary work on the counselling process. Dr. Fortin has authored over 15 articles on the topic of counselling. Joanne Greer, Ph.D., Loyola College, Baltimore, MD., will be the recipient of the Distinguished Career Research Award for her significant contributions to the field of pastoral counselling.

As well, the HHSC Chaplaincy Research Prize will be awarded to Dr. Geary, the SPCR Research Prize to Dr. Fortin, and the John Wells Research Prize will be awarded to Dr. Joanne Greer. The St. Joseph’s Research grant will be awarded to Maureen Anderson, MTh. and the Dr. Kevin Smith Research Grant will be awarded to our youngest researcher, Molisa Meier. The awards and prizes will be presented on Friday. Join us to celebrate this event.

2. Congrès 2004 et atelier de la SRCP

3. Atelier pré-congrès 2004

Des inscriptions pour l’atelier pré-conférence – La résolution de conflits chez les couples et les individus : le pouvoir de transformation de l’affect – commencent à entrer. Tel qu’annoncé, le Dr. Les Greenberg, Université York, Toronto, spécialiste de la résolution de conflits dans les couples et parmi les individus, chercheur érudit sur la thérapie du processus, offrira l’atelier. 4. Congrès 2005 de la SRCP

Nous voulons vous rappeler que le thème du congrès de 2005 portera sur le vieillissement. Le Dr. Paul Rennick, Université Assomption, Windsor, Ontario, a gracieusement offert d’être l’hôte de ce congrès. Les manuscrits qui touchent à quelque aspect du vieillissement sont les bienvenus. À cet égard, les présentations de nouvelles découvertes concernant le vieillissement sont des plus prisées. Un appel de communication suivra à l’été. Commençons à y penser.

5. Publication des actes des congrès

Les communications présentées à chacun des dix congrès de la SRCP (1994-2003) ont été publiées ou le seront prochainement. Les actes du congrès de Sherbrooke paraîtront dans le volume 23 (2) de Sciences pastorales. Le détail de la publication des communications, année après année, se lit comme suit :

6. Renouvellement de votre adhésion à la SRCP

Si ce n’est déjà fait, il est temps de renouveler votre adhésion à la SRCP. L’adhésion est valide du 1 janvier jusqu’au 31 décembre de la même année. Les revenus provenant des cotisations servent à : maintenir la liste des adresses de courriel, imprimer le directoire des membres, développer et maintenir la page Web de la SRCP, procurer les fournitures de bureau. Les membres bénéficient de : le droit de nommer des candidat-es pour les fonctions exécutives et pour les lauréats de la recherche, le droit de vote à l’assemblée générale, frais réduits pour la participation au congrès et à l’atelier pré-congrès et une copie du directoire des membres.

Vous trouverez une copie du Bulletin d’adhésion sur la page Web. Sélectionnez-le–en le noircissant – pour l’imprimer. Postez votre formulaire à Elizabeth Meakes, Responsable de l’adhésion, 107, avenue Borden, Kitchener, (ON), N2H 3J2.

7. Page Web de la SRCP et courriel

Nous achevons une première année de communication avec vous par l’entremise de la page Web et par le courriel. Cela change énormément les façons de faire par rapport aux envois traditionnels. En recourant au courriel et au site Web, nous ne savons pas si vous recevez bien vos envois. Nous apprécions recevoir votre rétroaction et vos commentaires en rapport à ces nouvelles manières de communiquer avec vous.

La première phase de la page Web touche à sa fin. Nous devons nous consacrer à la préparation des données pour les pages en français. De plus, nous souhaitons ajouter de la couleur et du style.

Quelques personnes ont mentionné avoir de la difficulté à atteindre note page Web. Je vous rappelle que vous pouvez soit taper http:www.pastoralcounselling.ca dans la fenêtre d’adresse de site Web, ou bien rechercher notre page avec Google – recherche avancé, correspondance exacte – Tapez The Society for Pastoral Counselling et faites un retour de chariot. Cette seconde méthode vous permet de voir les autres sites qui réfèrent au nôtre.

8. SRCP : Lauréat-es et prix de la recherche

Présidé par Thomas O’Connor, le comité des lauréats, a décidé de reconnaître trois lauréats de la recherche au congrès annuel de la Société. Il s’agit du lauréat de la dissertation et des lauréats de carrière de recherche junior et distinguée. Brendan Geary Ph.D., Collège Loyola, Baltimore, MD, recevra le lauréat de la dissertation. Dans sa thèse, le Dr. Geary a présenté un nouveau paradigme pour le counselling pastoral. Un résumé de son modèle est présenté dans Sciences pastorales (2003, 22,1, 65-90). Le lauréat de la jeune carrière de recherche sera présenté à Gilles Fortin Ph.D. Université Saint-Paul, pour sa recherche interdisciplinaire sur le processus de counselling. Le Dr. Fortin a publié au-delà de 15 articles en la matière. Joanne Greer, Ph.D., Collège Loyola, Baltimore, MD, recevra le lauréat de la carrière de recherche distinguée. Félicitations aux récipiendaires!

En parallèle, le prix de la recherche de l’aumônerie du HHSC ira au Dr, Geary, le prix de recherche de la SRCP au Dr. Gilles Fortin et le prix de recherche John Wells à la Dr. Joanne Greer. L’Allocation St. Joseph sera remise à Maureen Anderson MTh. et l’Allocation Dr. Kevin Smith sera accordée à Molisa Meier, notre plus jeune chercheuse. Ces lauréats et distinctions seront remis le vendredi au repas du midi. Fêtons ensemble cet évènement!
