2. Highlights from the 2004 SPCR Conference
The informal feedback received from the participants was
that they found the papers presented at the conference to
have been stimulating and challenging and meeting and interacting
with colleagues refreshing and encouraging. They feel that
they belong to a community of scholars and researchers. The
conference was very well attended. Five of the seventeen papers
were presented in the French language. The number of French
speaking participants has been increasing for the past three
years. Appreciation is expressed to Micheline Boivin, Gilles
Fortin, Claude Mailloux, Judith Malette and Marie-Line Morin
and their colleagues and graduate students for bringing a
greater French presence to the conference.
The organization of this conference relied very heavily on
our volunteers – the Local Planning Committee - who began
to work months prior to the commencement of the conference.
The Executive wishes to express its thanks to Micheline Boivin,
Colette Conheady, Shelley Briscoe-Dimock, and Elizabeth Kwasniewski
for generously giving of their time and energy to make the
conference a pleasant experience and a success (Photos 1,
2 & 3).
On the eve of the conference a wine and cheese social was
organized for participants to meet, exchange their experiences,
and just to relax, particularly for those who completed a
long trip to Ottawa (Photos 4, 5, & 6).
Dr. Denis Hurtubise, Vice-Rector, Academic, Saint Paul University,
welcomed the participants to the 11th annual conference
of the Society for Pastoral Counselling Research (Photo 7).
Following the welcoming address, there was the keynote address,
the paper presentations, the annual business meeting (Photo
9), and presentations of the research awards, prizes and grants.
The following represent some of the highlights of the conference.
Pre-conference workshop: One of the highlights was
the day-long pre-conference workshop offered by Dr. Les Greenberg
from York University, Toronto. The theme of the conference
was Conflict Resolution in Couples and Individuals: The
Transforming Power of Affect. More than sixty participants
attended the workshop and had an opportunity to personally
meet the founding author of Emotion-Focused Couple Therapy
Dr. Les Greenberg presented the Keynote Address, the
topic being: Emotions in Interpersonal Conflict Resolution
(Photo 8). In his talk, Dr. Greenberg discussed the role that
emotion plays in couples conflict and its resolution. He distinguished
between primary and secondary emotions and instrumental and
maladaptive emotions and indicated which emotions to work
with. In resolving conflicts it is also necessary to work
with emotions in context of the nature of the couples’ interactions
(affiliation, dominance) and their intimacy and attachment
styles. A copy of Dr. Greenberg’s paper will be available
as a chapter of a book to be published in 2005. Watch for
announcements to this effect.
Research awards, prizes and grants: Three research
awards and prizes and two research grants were presented at
the conference.
The Distinguished Career Research Award and the John
Wells Research Prize were presented to Joanne Greer, Ph.D.,
Loyola College, Baltimore. In the citation it was mentioned
that she had a complete, illustrious and distinguished career
as researcher, professor, mentor, professional and administrator.
Dr. Greer was cited for her study of social issues, spirituality
and religion which were grounded in theory, particularly psychoanalysis
and were of international interest (Photo 10).
Gilles Fortin, Ph.D, Saint Paul University, Ottawa, was the
recipient of the Junior Career Research Award and of
the SPCR Research Prize. Since the completion of his
doctoral degree, Dr. Fortin has engaged in active research.
Dr. Fortin was cited for his interests and studies in the
counselling process, the process of experiential learning,
religious and spiritual values in counselling, and the clients’
search for self and transcendence (Photos 11 & 12).
The Dissertation Award and the HHSC Chaplaincy
Research Prize were presented to Brendan Geary, Ph.D.,
Scotland. Dr. Geary was cited for his creative research in
pastoral counselling. One of his publications is: A New Paradigm
for Pastoral Counsellors with Clinical Application. His research
interests include the study of spirituality in sex offenders
(Photos 13 & 14).
Two research grants were awarded as well. The St. Joseph’s
Grant was awarded to Maureen Anderson, MTh., Hamilton,
for her research on the experience of placement in a long-term
care facility. The Dr. Kevin Smith Grant was awarded
to Molisa Meier, Ottawa, for her research on the formation
of adolescents’ image of God (Photos 15 & 16).
3. The 2005 SPCR Pre-Conference Workshop
On May 12, 2005, pastor Lois D. Knutson will offer a one-day
pre-conference workshop on the topic of ageing and spiritual
care. Pastor Knutson, a Lutheran pastor, specializes in senior-adult
ministry. She has worked as a pastor and as a hospital and
nursing home chaplain. She has published a book, Understanding
The Senior Adult: A Tool for Wholistic Ministry. Pastor
Knutson is a frequent speaker at workshops, seminars, conferences
and national conventions. You are advised to register early
for this pre-conference workshop. More information regarding

4. The 2005 SPCR Conference
This is a reminder that the theme for the 2005 SPCR 12th
Annual conference will be on ageing and spiritual care. It
will be held from May 12-14, 2005, at the St. Basil Institute
for Counselling & Mental Health Education, Assumption
University, Windsor, Ontario. Pastor Lois Knutson will present
the keynote address. Dr. Joe Quinn and Dr. Norene Chevalier,
Assumption University, Windsor, Ontario, have graciously offered
to host the conference. They are already actively planning
for the conference and have come forward with some innovative
suggestions. Manuscripts on any aspect of ageing and spiritual
care are welcome. Of particular interest are papers which
report new research findings, be they qualitative or quantitative.

5. Nominations for the Research Awards And Grants
The SPCR Executive invites nominations for the four research
awards (Dissertation, Junior Career, Senior Career, Distinguished).
The eligibility criteria for each of these awards is posted
on our Web page under Research Awards. The Society usually
presents two research awards per year which are presented
at the annual conference.
The successful candidates of the awards will also receive
one of the Research Prizes: The HHSC Chaplaincy Research Prize
or the John Well’s Research Prize.
Nominations are also invited for two research grants: the
Dr. Kevin Smith and the St. Joseph Grants. The Dr. Kevin Smith
Grant is presented for ongoing research in spirituality, counselling
and health and the St. Joseph Grant is presented for ongoing
research in spiritual care. Consult the Society’s Web page,
under Research Prizes, for more detail.

6. Publication of Conference Papers
In the NewsLetter of Spring, 2004 (Vol. XI, No. 1), details
regarding the publication of papers presented at the first
ten SPCR conferences were reported. This will be an update
to that information.
2001: Papers presented at the Hamilton SPCR Conference
on the theme of Spirituality and Health are being published
in book form by Wilfrid Laurier University Press. Publication
date is spring, 2005. The three reviewers of the book-manuscript
were very impressed with its quality. One of the comments
was "no other conference in Canada or U.S.A. has published
in book form the proceedings on spirituality and health. This
heightens the importance of this publication. It is great
that it is Canadian." Such words are encouraging for
the efforts put forth by each of you who submitted a chapter
to the book. Peter VanKatwyk, Thomas O’Connor and Augustine
Meier are editing this volume.
2003: A few of the papers presented at the 10th
annual SPCR Conference at Sherbrooke on the theme of Images
of God are to be published in Pastoral Sciences this fall.
Some authors preferred other means to publish their manuscripts.
2004: The papers presented this past May on the theme
of conflict resolution are presently being edited by Martin
Rovers and Augustine Meier. Thus far we have received 13 manuscripts.
Novalis Publisher has shown interest in publishing the papers.
It is anticipated that the book will be released in 2005.

7. Renewal of SPCR Membership
The membership period extends from January 1st to December
31st of a given year. You will find a copy of the Membership
Form on our Web page under Membership. Simply download the

Being a member offers you the opportunity to be fully active
in SPCR affairs. As a member you have the right to nominate
candidates for executive positions and for research awards
and to vote on agenda items at the General Assembly. You are
also entitled to reduced conference and pre-conference workshop
fees and a copy of the SPCR Directory.
The revenue received from the Membership Fees is used to
maintain the electronic mail list, print the Directory, develop
and maintain the SPCR Web Page, and to purchase office supplies.
8. Election of Vice-President
This coming May, 2005, Dr. Carrie Doehring will be installed
as President of the Society for Pastoral Counselling Research.
This means that the position of Vice-President becomes vacant.
The Executive of the Society invites nominations for the Position
of Vice-President which is a two-year term beginning in May,
2005. The election of officers and their duties and tasks
are described on our Web page under Constitution, Constitution
(Articles VI & VII) and under Constitution, Officers’
Tasks. Nominations for Vice-President should be sent to Dr.
Carrie Doehring, Vice-President, by January 30, 2005. The
nominee is expected to prepare a 300-500 word statement indicating
how he or she will serve the Society when she/he becomes president.

9. Election of Officers
This coming May, 2005, those holding the positions of Secretary,
Treasurer, Membership Coordinator and Program Coordinator
will have completed a two-year term. According to the Constitution,
officers are entitled to hold two 2-year terms. Therefore
the officers may be re-elected to the same positions this
coming May. Nominations can be submitted prior to the meeting
or nominations may be received from the floor during the meeting.
If you wish to nominate someone for any of the four positions,
send your nomination to Dr. Carrie Doehring, Vice-President
(See address above).
10. SPCR Web Page
In the months ahead we are going to complete the French section
of the Web page. We will use the services of a translator
to undertake this task. At the same time we will be working
with a graphic artist to complete the design of our Web page.

La rétroaction informelle reçue des participant-es soulignent
que les présentations on eu un effet stimulant et provocant.
De plus, les contacts avec les collègues furent rafraîchissants
et encourageants. Ils et elles ont senti leur appartenance
à une communauté de recherche et d’érudition. La participation
a été très bonne. Cinq des dix -sept communications ont été
données en langue Française. Le nombre de participant-es francophones
a augmenté depuis trois ans. Nous exprimons nos remerciements
à Micheline Boivin, Gilles Fortin, Claude Mailloux, Judith
Malette et Marie-Line Morin ainsi que leurs collègues et étudiants
gradués qui amènent une plus grande présence francophone à
la conférence.
L’organisation de cette conférence a reposé sur une grande
confiance envers nos bénévoles – le Comité local de planification
– qui a commencé à travailler bien des mois à l’avance. L’Exécutif
exprime ses remerciements à Micheline Boivin, Colette Conheady,
Shelley Briscoe-Dimock et Elizabeth Kwasniewski pour le don
généreux de leur temps et de leur énergie afin que la conférence

La veille de la conférence, un vin et fromage a permis aux
participant-es de se rencontrer, d’échanger et même simplement
de relaxer après un long voyage jusqu’à Ottawa (photos 4,
5 et 6)
Le Dr. Denis Hurtubise, vice-recteur à l’enseignement de
l’Université Saint-Paul a souhaité la bienvenue aux participant-es
de la 11ième conférence annuelle de la Société
de recherches en counselling pastoral (photo 7). Suite au mot
de bienvenue, il y a eu l’allocution principale, la présentation
des communications, la réunion annuelle des membres, ainsi
que la présentation des lauréats, prix et octrois. Voici quelques
grandes lignes de la conférence.
Atelier pré-conférence: Un des points marquants a
été l’atelier d’une journée donné par le Dr. Les Greenberg
de l’Université York, Toronto. Le thème en était: La résolution
de conflits chez les couples et les individus: le pouvoir
de transformation de l’affect. Plus de soixante personnes
se sont inscrites à l’atelier et ont eu l’opportunité de rencontrer
le fondateur de la thérapie de couple centrée sur les émotions.
Le Dr. Les Greenberg a également donné l’allocution principale
portant sur le rôle que les émotions jouent dans un conflit
de couple et dans sa résolution. (photo 8). En distinguant
les émotions primaires des secondaires et les émotions instrumentales
des maladaptives, il a indiqué les émotions à travailler.
Le travail de résolution de conflit doit également tenir compte
du contexte des interrelations du couple (affiliation, dominance)
ainsi que de leur style d’intimité et d’attachement. L’allocution
du Dr. Greenberg se retrouvera sous forme d’un chapitre du
livre qui sera publié en 2005. Des annonces seront faites
à cet effet, demeurons à l’affût!
Lauréats de recherche, prix et allocations: Trois
prix et lauréats de recherche et deux allocations de recherche
on été décernés à la conférence.
Le Lauréat de la Carrière distinguée en recherche
et le Prix de recherche John Wells ont été présentés
à la Dre Joanne Greer, Ph.D., Loyola College, Baltimore. La
présentation de la lauréate faisait mention que la Dre Greer
a eu une carrière complète, illustre et distinguée en tant
que chercheure, professeure, mentor, professionnelle et administrateure.
D’intérêt international, l’étude ancrée dans la théorie, particulièrement
la théorie analytique, des enjeux sociaux, de la spiritualité
et de la religion marque sa carrière (photo 10)
Gilles Fortin, Ph.D., de l’Université Saint-Paul a reçu le
Lauréat de la carrière junior de recherche et le Prix
de recherche de la SRCP. Depuis la fin de son doctorat,
le Dr. Fortin est activement engagé dans la recherche. Il
est remarqué à la faveur de son intérêt et de ses études du
processus de counselling, de l’apprentissage expérientiel,
les valeurs spirituelles et religieuses dans le counselling
et la quête de soi ainsi que de la transcendance (photos 11
et 12).
Le Lauréat de la dissertation et le Prix de Recherche
de l’aumônerie du HHSC ont été décernés à Brendan Geary,
Ph.D., Écosse. Le Dr. Geary a été remarqué pour la créativité
de sa recherche. Entre autres, il a publié «Un nouveau paradigme
en counselling pastoral avec applications cliniques». Il s’intéresse
également à la spiritualité des abuseurs sexuels (photos 13
et 14).
Deux allocations de recherche ont été décernées. Maureen
Anderson a reçu l’Allocation St. Joseph pour sa recherche
sur l’expérience du placement dans un centre de soins de longue
durée. L’Alloca-tion Dr. Kevin Smith a été décerné
à Molisa Meier, Ottawa, pour sa recherche sur la formation
des images de Dieu à l’adolescence (photos 15 et 16).

4. La conférence 2005 de la SRCP

6. Publication des actes de conférence
Le Bulletin de nouvelles du printemps 2004 (Vol XI, no
1) fait état des publications des communications des 10 premières
conférences de la SRCP. Voici quelques mises à jour.
2001: Les communications présentées à la conférence
de Hamilton sur le thème spiritualité et santé seront publiées
sous la forme d’un livre qui sortira des Presses de l’Université
Wilfrid Laurier au printemps 2005. Les trois personnes chargées
de l’évaluation ont été impressionnées par la qualité du manuscrit.
Un des commentaires affirmait «il n’y a aucune autre conférence
au Canada ou aux USA qui ait publié ses travaux sous la forme
d’un livre. Cela met en évidence l’importance de cette publication.
C’est bien que ce soit Canadien.». De telles paroles supportent
les efforts des auteurs ayant contribué un chapitre au livre.
Les éditeurs de ce nouveau livre sont Peter VanKatwyk, Thomas
O’Connor et Augustine Meier.
2003: Quelques unes des communications présentées
à Sherbrooke sur le thème des images de Dieu seront publiées
dans le numéro d’automne de la revue Sciences Pastorales.
Quelques auteurs ont choisi d’autres moyens de publication.
2004: Les communications présentées en mai dernier
sur le thème de la résolution de conflits sont éditées par
Martin Rovers et Augustine Meier. Jusqu’à présent, 13 manuscrits
ont été reçus. Les éditions Novalis se sont montrées intéressées
à publier le volume. Le livre devrait sortir sur le marché
en 2005.
