Research Prizes and Grants
During the past three years, three donors offered money to The
Society for Pastoral Counselling Research to support research in
pastoral care and counselling. These donations, in keeping with
the intent of the donors, are awarded in terms of research prizes
and research grants.
Research Prizes
In May, 2001, the Executive of the Society for Pastoral Counselling
Research (SPCR) established two Research Prizes, namely, the Hamilton
Health Science Chaplaincy (HHSC) Dissertation Prize and the
John Wells Research Prize (Formerly called the SPCR Research
Prize). These Prizes are presented in conjunction with the SPCR
Research Awards.
HHSC Dissertation Prize
Rev. John O’Connor, M.Div., manager of Chaplaincy, Hamilton Health
Sciences Corporation, took the initiative to establish a Dissertation
Prize. The prize, worth five hundred dollars, is to be presented
in conjunction with the SPCR Dissertation Award. The prize is to
be called the HHSC Dissertation Prize. Rev. O’Connor has
committed to offer the prize for five years, beginning May, 2001.
In the absence of a Dissertation Award, the Dissertation Prize is
offered to any one of the other three Research Awards (See heading,
Research Awards).
John Wells Research Prize
The John Wells Research Prize, worth five hundred dollars, is to
be given to the recipient of the Junior, Senior or Distinguished
Career Research Award. Mr. John Wells has committed to offer the
prize for five years beginning May, 2001. The research prize will
be given annually in conjunction with one of the three Research
Awards just mentioned. The designation of this prize for either
of the Research Awards is left to the discretion of the SPCR Executive.
Research Grants
In May, 2003, the Executive of the Society for Pastoral Counselling
Research established two Research Grants, namely, Dr. Kevin Smith
Grant and the St. Joseph’s Grant. These research grants
were made possible through a donation from the St. Joseph’s Hospital,
Hamilton, Ontario. This occurred through the initiative of Dr. Kevin
Smith, the Chief Executive Officer of St. Joseph’s hospital. Dr.
Smith, in the name of the hospital, has committed $1000 per year
for five years beginning May, 2003. This money is split evenly for
the two awards, each of which is worth $500. These research grants
are awarded for ongoing research projects and are awarded at the
Annual Conference of the Society which usually takes place in May.
The Dr. Kevin Smith Grant
This grant of $500 is given for ongoing research in spirituality,
counselling and health. This grant is available to any person engaged
in ongoing research in spirituality, counselling and health. The
researcher in person applies for this grant. This entails submitting
a written proposal of the research, which has been approved by an
institution, to the President of the Society. The proposal will
be reviewed by the Awards Committee in relationship to the intent
of the donor and SPCR research standards.
St. Joseph Grant
The St. Joseph Grant, worth $500, is given for ongoing research
in spiritual care, that is, to a person who is engaged in both research
and the provision of pastoral care, particularly in a hospital setting.
The researcher in person applies for this grant. This involves submitting
a written proposal of the research, which has been approved by an
institution, to the President of the Society. The proposal will
be reviewed by the Awards Committee in relationship to the intent
of the donor and SPCR research standards.
